Port of Duisburg expands activities in China – duisport strengthens its international network

Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and China Railway Container Transport Corp., Ltd (CRCT), a subsidiary of the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd, will work together more closely in the future. The parties have just concluded a framework agreement for the continued expansion of the China Railway Express traffic.
CRCT, which is based in Beijing, was founded in November 2003 with a capital stock of EUR 502 million. The company's service portfolio covers the transport of goods, international freight services and the international trade of goods.
With this strategic cooperation, the two leading companies in the transport and logistics sector are promoting rail freight between China and Duisburg. In addition, duisport also strengthens its position as Europe's main hinterland hub and expands its international network. At this time, up to 40 trains already travel between Duisburg and China every week.
“The collaboration with CRCT not only provides our customers with an additional service but also allows us to increase capacity utilization and efficiency,” says duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake.
Together with CRCT Europe Logistics GmbH, CRCT will officially open its European branch office in Duisburg on 26 November 2019.

Today, Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Port of Duisburg as part of his visit to the Ruhr region. He toured logport I with duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake. The former site of the Krupp steel mill in Rheinhausen has given way to a booming 265-hectare logistics area that is now home to approximately 50 companies and more than 5,000 employees. Directly or indirectly, the Port of Duisburg employs over 47,000 people and is therefore the job engine in the Rhine-Ruhr region.
logport I is also the starting point and destination for the China trains, 35-40 of which travel weekly between the Port of Duisburg and a dozen Chinese destinations. This means that duisport is the most important central European logistics hub for the China trade.
The second destination of President Steinmeier’s visit was duisport subsidiary startport, which is located in the Wehrhahnmühle. Started two years ago, the startup accelerator has grown into a platform for globally inspiring and innovative ideas for the logistics industry.
“We are very pleased that we had an opportunity to personally inform the President of our activities for the region. With logport I, the Port of Duisburg delivered a major impetus for the structural transformation of Duisburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region. In addition, startport provides a breath of fresh air for the logistics industry right here in the Port of Duisburg,” says Staake.

Duisburg, 27th of September 2019 - Regular transports of goods have started between the Cosco Shipping port Zeebrugge Terminal (CSP) and the Port of Duisburg. This means that the trilateral agreement for the new hinterland connection between duisport, CSP and the Belgium port of Zeebrugge (MBZ), which was approved in June of this year, has now been implemented.
The Chinese company Cosco Shipping Lines recently expanded its activities as part of the “Belt & Road” initiative with two weekly maritime connections from China to Zeebrugge. With this regular hinterland connection, dpa now uses the network of the Port of Duisburg as the central logistics hub for further transport into Europe.
The operational aspects of the connection between Zeebrugge and the Port of Duisburg will be handled by duisport subsidiary duisport agency GmbH (dpa). dpa is the central marketing company for intermodal transport solutions, which also include the option of using duisport as an extended gate. Therefore, goods do not have to be cleared for customs at the Zeebrugge seaport because this function has been transferred to the terminals in the Port of Duisburg. This dpa service considerably reduces the transport time for the goods.
In addition, Cosco Shipping will create the required logistics environment in the Port of Duisburg, so that it can organize the further transport of the goods “from door to door” into the surrounding area on its own. “Cosco Shipping is a major multinational partner who believes in the advantages of our international network and who uses the Port of Duisburg as a gateway into all of Europe,” says duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake.

Transport in Berlin / The “Logistics Leader of the Year 2019” award, presented for the first time, goes to the CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, Angela Titzrath.

inland port logistics” among 30 candidates from nine nations to the international Logistics Hall of Fame. “Erich Staake is the man behind the `wonder of Duisburg´. With his logport concept, he has achieved
a task of the century in logistics in less than 20 years by transforming Duisburg's regional port into a leading logistics hub in Europe. He has not only set a logistical milestone, but has also given Duisburg a new perspective,” says Anita Würmser, managing chairwoman of the Logistics Hall of Fame jury, explaining the decision of the jury, which includes 70 well-known personalities from business, science, politics and the media in 13 nations.
Erich Staake can claim to have led inland port logistics into a new era. On the basis of his logport concept he reinvented the Port of Duisburg as a multimodal logistics location and turned it into the largest inland port in Europe and an international benchmark. According to the jury the manager has not only significantly developed logistics itself, but also impressively demonstrated how logistics strengthens the economic power and quality of life of an entire region. A total of 50,000 jobs, 7,000 directly in the port, have been created over the past 20 years.
Staake is the 35th member among the most deserving logistics managers in the world. The 65-year-old manager from the Ruhr region will be officially inducted on December 5 on the occasion of the annual Logistics Hall of Fame reception in the Erich-Klausener-Saal at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure in Berlin.
Angela Titzrath is Logistics Leader of the Year
The Logistics Leader of the Year award will be presented for the first time at the reception. It goes to Angela Titzrath, CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA). The manager is honoured as a “change maker” who has led the terminal operator HHLA to economic and sustainable success with innovative ideas, courage and stamina within a short period of time. The 53-year-old manager has occupied new business fields and is using future technologies to develop the digitization of the Port of Hamburg.
With this award the organisation identifies the clock-setters of logistics. The award honours managers who have made a particularly successful contribution to their companies or set a trend-setting impulse. The focus is on topicality and the benefits for the company.
The decisive factor for admission to the Logistics Hall of Fame, on the other hand, is that an achievement is not only advantageous for an individual company, but that it has significantly and permanently advanced logistics beyond the boundaries of one´s own organisation or has become an industry standard. So far 35 logisticians have made it into the international hall of fame. Minus 161 degrees and 1/600 of the normal volume - that is Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Service vehicles in the Port of Duisburg will be able to drive with this gas effective immediately. Duisburger Hafen AG and RWE Supply & Trading GmbH opened the joint LNG fuel station with a ceremony during this year’s RWE Energy Dialogue, RWE’s industry customer event.
The mobile fuel station is the first step towards an LNG infrastructure - with the objective of establishing LNG as an environmentally-friendly fuel in the Port of Duisburg. The LNG fuel station is part of the effort to establish a functioning application environment for this fuel in the region. “We consistently pursue the expansion of the LNG infrastructure in the Port of Duisburg. In this way, we make an important environmental contribution towards reducing local emissions,” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. The facility lowers CO2 and other emissions and strengthens the business location and region. The results will be included in a long-term business model for using LNG as a fuel.
In the start phase, reach stackers and terminal tractor units were already retrofitted for LNG. They are now tested in dual diesel and LNG operations, as well as in purely LNG operations. “We are proud to contribute towards reducing emissions in the Port of Duisburg,” says Andree Stracke, a member of the management team at RWE Supply & Trading GmbH and in charge of the industrial customer and LNG business. “In the next step, we want to expand the use of LNG in the Port of Duisburg to other vehicles.” With the fuel station, RWE is addressing the steadily growing interest in LNG in Germany and Europe.
The LNG fuel station is part of a joint research project by RWE Supply & Trading, duisport and the Universität Duisburg-Essen. Because of its trend-setting innovative potential, this LNG infrastructure project is also supported by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) in the amount of EUR 740,000.

duisport welcomes 22 new apprentices – The port expands its training program

Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) has invited its 22 new apprentices to a two-day “Welcome Days” event in the Duisburg Nord landscape park. This event gave apprentices an opportunity to meet older apprentices and managers from the duisport companies. This year, the “Welcome Days” replace the former orientation days for apprentices by ensuring communication across locations and hierarchies to facilitate the apprentices’ entry into the organization.
This year, duisport is training the largest group of apprentices in the company's history. duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake, who welcomed the apprentices, notes that the Port of Duisburg has been certified as an “Excellent Training Facility” for the past three years. Staake: “duisport is an attractive training facility and an employer with a positive future outlook.”
