LNG project wins climate protection competition

• Joint project receives grant of EUR 740,000
• Energy-Efficient Companies Competition North-Rhine Westphalia supports investments in growth and employment

Duisburg, 4 January 2018 - The innovative LNG infrastructure project of Duisburger Hafen AG, RWE Supply & Trading GmbH and Universität Duisburg-Essen has received a grant of EUR 740,000 from the European Fund for Regional Development.

As part of the joint project, an infrastructure for LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) will be developed in the Port of Duisburg. The main objective of the project is to establish a functioning application field for LNG in the region, and to improve the state of knowledge for the use of LNG. This leads to a reduction in CO2 and other emissions, while simultaneously strengthening the local and regional economies. “We are pleased that the joint project won this climate protection and thus became eligible to receive a grant. With its multimodal concept, the project lays the foundation for sustainable mobility at the beacon location Port of Duisburg,” emphasizes Andree Stracke, a member of the management team at RWE Supply & Trading GmbH with responsibility for industrial clients and the LNG business.

“The grant acknowledges our considerable efforts in the development of an LNG infrastructure. Through these efforts, we are making an important contribution to environmental policy together with strong partners in the region,” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger
Hafen AG.

Armin Spengler from the Chair in Construction Operations and Management at Universität Duisburg-Essen: “We are fitting the test devices with the required sensors. The parameters that will be measured include CO2 emissions, particulate emissions and changes in use, which are important to the ecological balance sheet.”

The joint project will start in January 2018; it has a term of 29 months and planned expenditures of EUR 1.5 million.

The centerpiece of the project is the operation of a multimodal mobile LNG fuel station, as well as the retrofitting of two port handling systems from diesel to LNG (accompanied by research efforts), and a demonstration of everyday operations. The demonstration project focuses on the research and development of the LNG technology, with the aim of permanently increasing the state of knowledge regarding the use of LNG in industry. This will involve the test operation of port handling equipment, such as reach stackers and terminal tractor units, under real conditions. The equipment will be researched, tested and optimized in dual diesel and LNG operations, as well as in purely LNG operations. The results that are obtained will be used to develop a long-term business model for the use of LNG as a fuel.

LNG is natural gas that is cooled to -161° degrees to create liquefied gas. This has the effect of reducing the volume to approximately 1/600 of the volume of natural gas under normal pressure, which makes it possible to transport large volumes of natural gas. LNG is much more environmentally-friendly since emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and particulates are much lower than for other fuels.
