The locomotive workshop ensures safe and reliable locomotive operations.

Your reliable partner for rail freight transport

duisport rail GmbH

duisport rail GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG, is your reliable partner for rail freight transport and logistics solutions. As a licensed public rail transport company (EVU) for freight, we ensure that your goods are transported efficiently and safely across the 200-kilometer rail network of the Port of Duisburg – and beyond. In addition to internal port connectivity, we offer regional rail shuttle services within a 150-kilometer radius as well as nationwide rail transport across Germany.

Our modern fleet includes 30 locomotives, two of which are approved for cross-border operations into the Netherlands. All locomotives are equipped with radio remote control systems to ensure flexible and seamless operations. We employ more than 120 staff members, including locomotive engineers and wagon inspectors, who guarantee smooth daily operations.

As a certified training provider with its own training center, duisport rail is ideally positioned to handle the education and professional development of both in-house and external railway personnel.

Efficient rail logistics for intermodal transport

Benefit from our Duisburg location’s close connection to over 100 destinations across Europe, as well as intercontinental links such as the Duisburg–China route.

With its strong regional presence, duisport rail offers a wide range of rail services tailored to the specific needs of shippers and freight forwarders – ensuring your goods reach their destination safely and in an environmentally friendly manner.

Modern locomotives for transporting your goods!

Rail is already the most sustainable mode of transport – and we are continuously working to make rail logistics even greener and more advanced. As an innovation leader, we underline our commitment by ordering two Modula EBB locomotives for lease and partnering with manufacturer Vossloh Rolling Stock to put the first hydrogen-powered locomotive, the Modula BFC, into operation. In doing so, we are driving forward the decarbonization of rail transport.

Our services for rail transport and rail logistics project implementation

duisport rail GmbH offers a broad range of rail logistics services tailored to the high demands of partner rail operators, port-based companies, freight forwarders, and logistics operators.

Shuttle services (regional)

duisport rail organizes and operates regional shuttle services within the Port of Duisburg and surrounding areas. We provide everything from a single source: planning, personnel, locomotives, and freight wagons.

Long-distance services (national)

For long-distance rail freight transport, we offer services to various regions across Germany.

These services start from or are destined for the Duisburg region and are planned either as regular or spot services – ensuring the flexibility you need and meeting your specific requirements.

First / Last Mile

We handle block trains, partial trains, and wagon groups for rail-based transport on the first and last mile.

Whether servicing one of the ten intermodal terminals, a tank farm, or another port-based company – with our own locomotives and trained personnel, we ensure flexible and efficient handling.

Shunting of damaged and reserve wagons

We remove damaged wagons and quickly integrate reserve wagons into your operations. This service is available throughout the entire duisport area and ensures smooth operational processes.

Upon request, we can transfer your damaged wagon to the nearest workshop.

Industrial shunting service

We serve various sites and terminals with continuous shunting operations to ensure the flexible and timely provision of required freight wagons at each operating location.

Our planning is fully tailored to the individual needs of our customers.

Wagon inspection services for duisport and external trains

Our qualified personnel carry out technical wagon inspections (WTU) on trains and railcars – both for duisport’s own trains and those operated by other railway companies. This includes loading consultation and the inspection of special freight wagons.

Special wagon inspections and quality checks

We carry out special wagon inspections and comprehensive quality checks to ensure the safety and efficiency of your transports.

Global and sustainable: The advantages of rail transport with duisport

Economic efficiency

Thanks to high load capacity and the ability to transport large volumes in a single train, you can save both time and costs.

Sustainability

Shifting cargo from road to rail reduces CO₂ emissions and eases congestion on heavily used transport routes.

High reliability and safety

Rail transport is less prone to disruptions, has lower accident rates, and enables predictable logistics without traffic jams.

Digital wagon inspection support

At duisport, we are constantly developing new innovations to meet the demands of modern rail logistics. One of our latest advancements is the DIANA wagon inspection assistance system, which is transforming the handling of freight trains. Information about trains, wagons, and cargo is collected via mobile devices, while sensors and camera systems detect and report any damage.

This innovative digital support makes technical wagon inspections more stable, faster, and more precise – an important step toward shifting more transport to rail and maximizing operational efficiency in duisport’s rail services.

Duisburg locomotive service

Technology that connects!

The locomotive workshop of Duisburger Lokservice GmbH is available for the maintenance and servicing of your diesel locomotives – fully equipped, qualified, and certified for the job.

Preventive and corrective maintenance on locomotives is part of our daily operations at the Duisburg Port location, alongside overhauls, general inspections, repairs, and refurbishments.

Despite long-term maintenance planning, unplanned disruptions sometimes require quick action. For such cases, a well-equipped mobile response team is available within a 150 km radius around Duisburg to restore locomotive availability as quickly as possible – completing our range of services.

Our workshop covers approximately 2,370 square meters and includes 8 service tracks with a total working length of 256 meters. In addition, within the adjacent Duisburg Port rail yard, further tracks with a total length of 1,000 meters are permanently available.

Three lifting systems, each with four jacks and a total lifting capacity of up to 100 tons, allow parallel work on multiple locomotives. Additional flexibility is provided by four overhead cranes with a lifting capacity of 10 tons each, as well as three track pits. Our fully stocked spare parts warehouse ensures high availability and short response times, even in challenging supply situations.
